Cadaqués, a Beautiful Seaside Village

To celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary we went to Cadaqués, a beautiful seaside village from north Empordà. This is one of the perfect sites to spend your holidays, because you have everything to be entertained (or if you prefer, to take a deserved break). Here you can go to the beach (stony, not sandy), visit museums and art galleries, walk around the stunning natural spot of Cap de Creus and enjoy their tasty gastronomy. To know this medieval village the best option is to hang around the streets from Old Town and be careful not to slip with the typical pavement, handmade with pick up slate stones from the seaside (don’t wear heels!). At the upper side, we find the majestic church of Santa Maria de Cadaqués (s.XVI) where you have stunning views from the bay and the Cala Nans lighthouse.

But maybe this village is best known for its artistic life. Several famous painters as Pablo Picasso, Antoni Pichot, Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dalí or writers as Federico García Lorca and Josep Pla, as well as the famous filmmaker Luís Buñuel were attracted by this gorgeous spot. Salvador Dalí spent part of his life in a house at Cala Portlligat, now converted into a museum (you can visit by reservation). And this artistic tradition still remains and we find many galleries and workshops from the artists that have been settled at Cadaqués. More tourist information here.

Para  celebrar nuestro quinto aniversario de boda nos fuimos el fin de semana a Cadaqués, un precioso pueblo costero del norte del Empordà. Este es uno de los sitios perfectos para pasar unas vacaciones, ya que lo tienes todo para estar entretenido (o si lo prefieres, para tomarte un merecido descanso). Aquí puedes ir a la playa (pedregosa, no de arena), visitar museos y galerías de arte, pasear por los alucinantes parajes naturales de Cap de Creus y disfrutar de una sabrosa gastronomía. Para conocer este pueblo medieval lo mejor es callejear por su Casco Antiguo, pero ten cuidado de no resbalar con el pavimento de piedras de pizarra recogidas en la orilla del mar (¡prohibido ir con tacones!) En la parte más alta está la majestuosa iglesia de Santa Maria de Cadaqués iniciada a mediados del siglo XVI y desde donde hay unas vistas impresionantes de la bahía y del faro de Cala Nans.

Pero si por una cosa es conocido este pueblo es por su vida artística. Aquí han vivido grandes pintores como Pablo Picasso, Antoni Pichot, Marcel Duchamp y Salvador Dalí, escritores como Federico García Lorca y Josep Pla o como el famoso cineasta Luís Buñuel. Salvador Dalí residió durante muchos años en una casa ubicada en la cala de Portlligat, que actualmente se ha convertido en un museo (requiere reserva). Y actualmente esta tradición artística aún perdura y podemos encontrar numerosas galerías de arte y talleres de artistas que se han instalado en Cadaqués. Más información turística aquí.

Shanghai, the last

And finally, my special Shanghai tips:

-         Walk and walk if the area is very interesting, but if it is not, take a taxi! They are cheap and you can keep your energy for the good places.

-         Get a massage! The best way to relax and revive your poor legs and feet. They are plenty of places, but I love Dragonfly, a cozy urban retreat specializing relaxing massage and beauty treatments for busy-stressed men and women.

-         Take a night drink (or more) at one of the glamorous bars at The Bund. No matter if it is quite expensive… the moment will be magical! A good option is the terrace at brand new The Swatch Art Peace Hotel or if the weather is not good, better to go to The Glamour Bar.

-         Climb up to the sky! You’ll never find so many opportunities: the Oriental Pearl Tower, the World Financial Center, the Jinmao Tower… The view is really AMAZING!

-         Taste the local food. You don’t need to be a super adventurer and eat crunchy fried worm or roasted pigeon (although my husband did it, but it was my fault because I made a mistake when ordering…), but you can try a nice restaurant with yummy  dishes (and not so risky)

-         Take thousand of pictures, they are free! If you see something interesting or someone that attracts your attention…click! Perhaps you don’t come back to Shanghai never again and this would be a nice way to remember your trip (when you will be old and without any forces to rush around the world).

Y para acabar, mis consejos especiales para Shanghai:

-         Camina y camina, pero solamente si la zona es interesante, si no, ¡coge un taxi! Son baratos y deberás guardar tus energías para los sitios chulos (por los que tendrás que caminar)

-         ¡Date un masaje! Es la mejor manera de relajarte y reanimar tus pobres piernas y pies. Hay muchos lugares, pero mi preferido es Dragonfly, un espacio muy acogedor especializado en masajes y tratamientos de belleza para los estresados hombres y mujeres de Shanghai (ahora tú ya eres uno de ellos!)

-         Tómate una copa (o más) en uno de los glamorosos bares que se encuentran en The Bund. No importa que sea un poco caro… el momento será mágico! Una buena opción es la terraza del novísimo The Swatch Art Peace Hotel o si el tiempo no acompaña, mejor ir al The Glamour Bar.

-         ¡Sube hasta el cielo! Nunca vas a encontrar tantas oportunidades juntas: The Oriental Pearl Tower, the World Financial Center, the Jinmao Tower… ¡Las vistas son ESPECTACULARES!

-         Prueba la comida local. No es necesario que seas una superaventurer@ y te dediques a comer gusanos fritos o palomas rustidas (mi marido sí lo hizo, pero es que me equivoqué al pedir el plato…), pero puedes experimentar con algún restaurante chulo con platos apetecibles (y no taaaan arriesgados).

-         Tira miles de fotos ¡que son gratis! Si ves alguna cosa interesante, alguna persona que te llama la atención… click! Igual no vuelves a Shanghai nunca más en toda tu vida, por lo que tener fotos será una manera divertida de recordar tu viaje (cuando seas viejecit@ y no tengas fuerzas para ir trotando por el mundo).

Shanghai, part two

To follow our Shanghai tour, let’s visit the Ancient city (Nanshi) with the famous Yu Garden. This is the typical classical Chinese garden: shaded pavilions to rest and listen to the bird’s songs, small pools with carps and lots of trees and flowers… it is a good option to relax from the bustling city, but don’t visit at weekend, because then you only would find tourists and more tourists!

Para continuar nuestro tour por Shanghai, visitemos la Ciudad Vieja (Nanshi) con su famoso Jardín Yu. Este es un típico jardín clásico chino: sombríos pabellones donde descansar y escuchar el cantar de los pájaros, pequeñas fuentes con peces de colores y montones de flores y árboles. Es una buena opción para descanar un rato de la ajetreado ciudad, pero no lo visites el fin de semana ya que está lleno a reventar de turistas!

 Around this garden you can find lot of small souvenirs shops, famous teahouses and if you walk a little you will see the “real” old city (with their local markets, houses and people). But hurry up, because the new Shanghai is coming so fast (they are demolishing old neighbourhood to build brand new ones). One of my favourites street markets is the flea market at Dongtai Lu, where you can find different stuff from new copies of Ming vases to old poster with Shanghai girls (this market will be “closed” at the end of this year).

Alrededor de este jardín te vas a encontrar tiendas de souvenirs, casas de té y, si te alejas un poco, podrás ver la “real” ciudad vieja (con sus casa destartaladas, mercados locales y gente que vive en Shanghai). Pero date prisa, ya que el nuevo Shanghai se está comiendo el viejo a pasos agigantados (están demoliendo los antiguos barrios para construirlos perfectos y novísimos). Uno de mis mercados callejeros favoritos es el rastrillo que se monta en la calle Dongtai Lu, donde puedes encontrar desde una copia de una jarrón Ming a un antiguo póster con las famosas chicas de Shanghai (este mercado desaparecerá a finales de año).

Another part of the city that has been totally face-washed is Xintiandi, an example of traditional brick buildings renovated at beginning of 2000 (but “very” new for my taste). There you can find lot of bars, restaurants and fashionable boutiques… and the site of the first National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.

But I prefer the small narrow typical streets “lilong” at the French Concession or nearby. For example, Tianzifang, originally a typical lane factory at 50’s that was reconstructed at 2000 and developed to a new place with fashion cafes, art galleries and craft shops (yeah! I like eating and shopping, sorry!)

Otra parte de la ciudad a la que han hecho un lavado de cara total es Xintiandi, un ejemplo de construcciones tradicionales con ladrillo visto que renovaron a principios del 2000 (y lo han dejado demasiado “nuevo” para mi gusto). Aquí puedes encontrar un sinfín de bares, restaurantes y tiendas de lo más fashion…y el edificio donde se celebró el primer Congreso Nacional del Partido Comunista Chino.

De todas maneras, prefiero las callejuelas estrechas llamadas “lilong” en la Antigua Concesión Francesa o alrededores. Por ejemplo, Tianzifang, originariamente fue una típica fábrica de los 50 que se reconstruyó en el 2000 y a pasado a ser un lugar repleto de cafés, galerías de arte y tiendas de artesanía (sí! Es que me encanta comprar y comer, perdón!)

Another interesting place is 1933 Shanghai, a new commercial hub for creative business at Hongkou neighbourhood. Built on 1930’s as an abattoir it was completely refurbished from ruins to show again the glorious Art Deco architecture.

Otro espacio interesante es 1933 Shanghai, un nuevo hub comercial para negocios creativos en el barrio de Hongkou. Construido en los años 30, este antiguo matadero fue completamente restaurado de un estado ruinoso para mostrar de nuevo su preciosa arquitectura Art Deco.

And our last stop is the famous People’s Square, a spectacular garden open space surrounded with museums. For me, the best is the Shanghai Museum, the museum of the traditional Chinese art, with galleries and galleries full of Ceramics and Paintings (arrive early to avoid queues and calculate ½ day to visit it). But if you don’t like museums, you can always take a look at the building from outside…

Y nuestra parada final es la famosa Plaza del Pueblo, un espectacular jardín abierto rodeado de museos. Para mí, el más interesante es el Museo de Shanghai, donde podrás ver una muestra del arte tradicional chino, con galerías y más galerías llenas de cerámica y pintura (eso sí, llega temprano para evitar las colas y piensa que vas a necesitar ½ día para visitarlo). Aunque si no te gusta visitar museos, siempre puedes admirarlo desde fuera, ya que el edificio es chulísimo…

Shanghai, part one

It’s been a long time since I came around
It’s been a long time but I’m back in town…

And it is not to emulate Lady Gaga, but actually it’s been a long time that I didn’t posted anything! But sometimes I need to disconnect and just relax… no blogs, no Internet, only “real” life (besides, I don’t think that lot of people missed me…)

During my pause, I’ve been very lucky because I could make a quick trip to Shanghai, one of the cities that I love most (and where I wouldn’t mind to live during a period) and I want to show you some of my favourite pictures.

Here we go, fasten your seatbelts…

Hace ya un tiempo que no actualizaba mi blog, pero a veces necesito desconectar y relajarme… sin blogs, sin Internet, solamente tener contacto con la vida “real” (de todas maneras, tampoco creo que se me haya echado mucho en falta…)

Durante esta pausa, he tenido la suerte de poder hacer un viaje relámpago a una de las ciudades que más me gustan (y a la que no me importaría nada irme a vivir durante una temporada): Shanghai. Y me encantaría enseñarte algunas de mis fotos favoritas. Allá vamos, abróchense los cinturones…

different hotels

If I could, I'd looove to live in a hotel. I would like to have my bed ready each night, with brand new sheets and fresh towels (I know that you are thinking that it is not very ecological, but don’t worry, because I do NOT live in one!).

Si pudiera viviría en un hotel. Me encantaría tener la cama lista para estrenar cada noche y las toallas nuevas cada vez que me duchase (sí, ya sé que estás pensando que es muy poco ecológico, pero no te preocupes, porque de todas maneras, NO vivo en uno!).

But now, I’d like to show you a different kind of hotel, not traditional or classical. These are examples about how you can build a hotel almost everywhere…
Can you think about a hotel up at the tree? Well, it exists! You can find one at Sant Hilari Sacalm (near Barcelona) and another at Harads (Sweden), where you can even sleep intside a birdnest or inside an UFO landed right at unspoiled nature. I can imagine myself, in the middle of the forest, just thinking, relaxing and listening to the birds…

Pero hoy te quiero enseñar unos hoteles “distintos” (otro día podemos repasar los más convencionales). Estos son ejemplos de cómo puede existir un hotel en casi cualquier sitio del mundo…

¿Te imaginas un hotel en un árbol? Pues sí, existe! De hecho, he encontrado uno aquí cerca, en Sant Hilari Sacalm y otro en Harads (Suecia) donde puedes dormir dentro de un nido o incluso en un ovni aterrizado en plena naturaleza (treehotel.se). Es el tipo de alojamiento perfecto para un retiro espiritual. Ya me veo, en medio del bosque, escuchando los pajaritos, relajándome viendo la puesta de sol…

 

  

 

On the other hand, it would be very original to spend a long weekend in a gitane caravan… I can see my friends and I, with lot of wine (they drink a lot, not me!), music and a big camp fire dancing under the stars…

Aunque también es una idea original y divertida disfrutar de la vida nómada pasando un fin de semana en una caravana gitana…Ya me imagino con mis amigos, montando una superfiesta con vino, música y una gran fogata!

 

But if I want to celebrate a romantic getaway, I would choose a charming péniche (barge) at Canal du Midi, in south of France. These barges have all the conveniences and they are a different way to discover the surrounding vineyards and villages from the river…

Pero si pienso en una escapada romántica, me apetecería más pasar unos días en una péniche (barcaza fluvial) en el Canal du Midi, en el sur de Francia. Estos barcos cuentan con todas la comodidades y ofrecen una manera distinta de descubrir la zona desde el río…

And, do you have any suggestion?
